5.2m and Waves

The wind was on the light side and the direction was slightly onshore but it was a good day. The waves were not huge but they were quite powerful. 5.2m was the size of the day, three of us hit the water early and had started rigging before the farmer opened the gate in the morning.

Quite a few masts and sails  and one board paid the price, but on the bright side the unlucky will get to sail new kit…

Two weekends of  port tack sailing in a row it can’t last…

P.S.

Happy Birthday Juice

This is a shot from the weekend before which I managed to get a print of from

Windsnapper.  Hopefully he will post the shots he took today on his Flickr page.

Fraisthorpe South Easterly

Three of us (5 if you count the 2 kitesurfers ) braved the cold today which felt comparatively warm after last weeks glacial temperatures. It was very windy, with really strong gusts. I rigged a 4.0m and Jeff and Matt opted for a 4.5m.

A good session apart from pulling the boom into my face mid-air and giving myself the only nose bleed I have ever had. Once my face was cleaned up I enjoyed blasting out to the back were there were some nice 3 m rolling waves to jump off breaking over a sandbar. Riding was mainly backside but I managed a few frontside turns on the smaller sections.

Filey Windsurfing Video

Awesome Windsurfing session at Filey!

Last Windsurfing of December 2009?

Well we thought we had had the last of what 2009 had to offer but no whilst some parts of the country were covered in snow the east coast was a toasty 3 or 4 degrees and we managed a survival ‘seat of your pants’ session at Filey.

It was a gusty North Easterly wind that saw us scuttling up and down the coast to find a more side shore launch, we gave Fraisthorpe a miss for once as we wanted to try a new venue after sailing lots of onshore days at Bridlington. After checking out three other launches we finally decided to go for it at Filey. Port tack with a huge rolling sea we opted for 5.2m as it was still slightly onshore and although the gusts were very strong there were periods of little wind. On the outside the waves looked huge and on the inside there was a shallow flat section that then led to a smaller head high breaking wave.

This was the first time I had sailed Filey and with the size of the waves the fickle wind, the temperature and the tide just starting to touch the bottom of the sea wall it was probably not the best time to have a first go. But all in all we survived and it was great fun.

Thanks to Chris on camera and Jeff for going for it!

The tide was just touching the bottom of the sea wall.

If you look at the waves on the left and compare them

to the size of the windsurfer you can judge the size of the waves.

It was a long way out and it was not a place to let go of your kit…

Still Windsurfing in the snow at Bridlington in United Kingdom!

Winter BeachWinter Timelapse at the beachThere are people out there this week! I got this in an email yesterday! Hopefully I’ll be able to go on Sunday if conditions look good!
“Was on the water yesterday. Lasted about an hour, the conditions were absolutely freezing. It was even snowing whilst I was out. Conditions cross onshore. Very windy, completely overpowered on my 4.5. Sea state: Very big and very messy. Swell was way over mast high and breaking as far out as the I could see. It was a complete survival session. But never the less I enjoyed it just the same. Nice to be back on the water as I have not had a chance to sail in the last 4 weeks.”

Winnsnapper has added a new photograph of the winter beach and a time lapse of Gump from Juice Boardsports.

Winner to Wavesailor DVD Review : Windsurfing Bridlington : Fraisthorpe : United Kingdom

Windsurfing Bridlington

Winner to Wavesailor DVD Review –  I give it 10 out of 10 !

I got my hands on a copy of this at the weekend and I  have to say I was impressed. Jem Hall explains many aspects of wave sailing on a windsurfer really clearly and simply. Many things that people ask you at the beach are explained and shown clearly in the video and on both tacks. So in the future I’ll send people to the local DVD store for a copy of this instead of me trying to explain what they wanted to know.  One of the forward comments has the best line of the whole DVD I’m still chuckling over it now, but I won’t spoil it for you. The other DVD guide I rate is Wave Sailing Secrets however I think Jem has done a better job.

So my advice is if you want to improve your windsurfing go and get a copy unless of course you are a pro and you’ll aready know how to do all the things covered. I used some of the tips  in my last windsurfing session at Bridlington to great effect. So perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks.

…and before you ask, no you can’t borrow my copy I’m still watching it.

Windsurfing Bridlington: Forward Loop Fever

Well for once we timed it perfectly the wind picked up after we arrived late, a cup of coffee with the boys – 5.7m and 95litres -cross on and a few rumbling ramps and at last some low starboard tack forwards. Waves were fun – No photographs but you can’t have everything HA HA! (I’ll have to stop reading Proffitts pages) Ben was sailing to his usual high standard and Chris is planing ealier and earlier… See you on the water tommorow let’s hope it doesn’t blow through. It looks like it is on for the weekday boys… again..!

Winsnapper: catches the windsurfing action

Winnsnapper catches the action again, good work, let’s hope there is some wind next weekend!

The weekday boys have had a great midweeker on Thursday by all accounts, with Chris coming back to form on his 5.3m and both local shops sailors getting out on the water too. I’m not sure if anyone caught the action on film, a shame.
